Val is 88 yrs old and has recently spent 3mths in bed with the flu and other ailments. I sketched this painting when she made the effort to get up and dress in the clothes that I bought her.

Tidal beauty : Since moving to this cabin beside the river, I have been obsessed by its beauty and its many moods. The fullness at high tide with jumping fish and kayaks to low tide when it reveals its sands and mangrove suckers.

I have transgressed into my other life of domestics and martyrdom, only to now suffer from painful side affects without the panacea of art.

'Neither Here Nor There'

This installation refers to the question 'where do I belong?' and my own feelings of displacement or lack of connection to one particular place.

On the Surface

The smiley face is a symbol of the superficial.

Superficial adj near the surface; slight, not profound; (person) shallow in nature.

Made of fabric, green bamboo and mud.

'Have a nice day!

A symbol of our times, the smiley face is as artificial as it is ubiquitous.
Are we losing our ability to discern between that which is superficial and that which is real?

This installation was part of the 'Surface' exhibition at the Tweed River Art Gallery. The opening was last night. (20th November 2009)
